What do you do for a living?
MA: I work for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration. I just started a new job on Monday in a different dept that I’m really excited about
What motivates you to compete? (Not just in crossfit but in life too)
MA: I’m a sore loser, that’s what motivates me, haha. I initially started working out back in 2006 to lose weight and get in shape. I knew nothing. I would go to the gym, and flit between cardio machines and weight machines. It took me years to figure out what I was doing. Once I understood weights better I became motivated by becoming a better lifter and stronger, rather than just trying to get skinny.
What was your first CrossFit experience like?
MA: I had been told by people I should try it, but honestly was skeptical because of the price. I finally tried it January 2014, and was in love right away. I had bronchitis the first two months of Crossfit but wouldn’t miss class because I loved it so much. I just powered through, haha.
How has it changed your life? (if at all)
MA: One: Crossfit has made me way more appreciative of my body. I used to dwell on numbers on the scale, then it became dwelling on numbers on the bar. Finally I just realized what my body is capable of, and I’m not hard on myself.
Two, it has made me more outgoing about going into situations by myself. I used to make someone go with me to everything. The Crossfit community definitely makes you feel welcomed, and accepted. It started with being able to go into any box, and be like hey we have this in common friends, let me workout with you! And that has branched out into every day life.
Do you have any hidden talents?
MA: I can drink an entire bottle of wine without being affected. Challengers accepted 😉
What would you say to people that say negative things about Crossfit?
MA: I get so annoyed when people say negative things about Crossfit. They either haven’t done it so I say well you have no basis for your opinion. If they have, and were injured I’d say well you probably didn’t follow your coaches instructions and were doing it wrong. When people say it makes you lose gains I just want to be like have you seen crossfitters?!?
