Happy Friday everyone!!
This week we have Anthony Garcia!!
Anthony is the kind of guy you want to keep in your corner. He’s hard working, devoted, understanding, and if you’re in need of a good laugh he’s your guy. His passion for helping others extends beyond his fire suit and we love him for it! Congrats Anthony!
What motivates you to compete? (Not just in crossfit but in life too)
AG: “Any form of complacency is the kiss of death for any professional.” We can ALWAYS get better at something, and just when you think you know or can do it all, life and Crossfit can humble you quick. I try to challenge myself by setting personal goals, whether they’re work, family, or fitness related – I don’t ever want to feel that feeling of complacency. Crossfit, and fitness in general, have helped me stay disciplined in life however small the task may seem.
What was your first CrossFit experience like?
AG: Like anyone else who tried Crossfit for the first time I thought I was “in shape.” I had just gotten out of the Navy were I had been a rescue swimmer for 3.5 years and at the time I was a decent runner training for a half marathon. I got invited to a local box in San Antonio. The workout was 100 KB Swings, 100 burpees, and 100 box jumps for time. I HATED it. Then I hated that I hated the workout. Then I hated that I wasn’t good at the workout. Then I hated myself for not being better. My hate turned to frustration and that frustration eventually lead to me wanting to be better at something I sucked at. The workout had challenged me and took me out of my comfort zone. It took me a few weeks to realize that’s what I needed.
How has it changed your life? (if at all)
AG: It keeps me healthy and active along with conditioning me for my job. It gives me confidence in myself and helps me establish new goals along they way. It’s also a way to release stress and surround yourself with likeminded individuals. I believe Crossfit has also strengthen the relationship between my girlfriend and I (as cheesy as that sounds.) We always have something to talk about and are there for one another for motivation and encouragement, on good days and bad. Our passion for Crossfit has also trickled down to my daughter, who is always eager to try do what me and Clarissa are doing. As a father there’s nothing more that I want for my daughter but to grow up happy, healthy, and active and I know I have to set the example she can look up to.
Do you have any hidden talents?
AG: I once ate 27 slices of pizza at CiCi’s pizza buffet in one sitting. No big deal.
What would you say to people that say negative things about Crossfit?
AG: In my experience, people that I have talked to that have ever had anything negative to say about Crossfit have either 1) Never done Crossfit, or 2) “Heard” how bad it was for them. To those people I always encourage them to try Crossfit. A good box with good coaches will explain form and movements to you and offer modifications if needed. (Which is why I invite them to Bedlam) I’m a big believer in that Crossfit is for EVERYONE of ALL ages regardless of your fitness background or health history. Do Crossfit. It’s good for you.
